Apollo 11, the documentary, was fascinating and put a smile on my face. I’m certainly not saying 1969 was the year the United States of America aged to perfection. Vietnam, civil rights, and other concerns made it an imperfect union. But it’s true that JFK asked Americans to value precision, intelligence, and expertise, and the Apollo program embodied those values for years. Precise physics and engineering, and exacting measurements from NASA bureaucrats to keep it all on schedule. Precision even from JFK’s chief wordsmith, Ted Sorensen, in crafting the words to inaugurate the Apollo program. That spirit of exactitude is in direct contradiction to the Cult of Ignorance promoted by Donald Trump. Yelling at the TV, eating junk food, pigging out at the public trough–the current presidency can’t spell precision let alone practice it.
