The pandemic started around St. Patrick’s Day and I bought some Irish folk songs for celebrating, not thinking much of it. Little did I know I would fall deep in love with them. I have a 5-CD stereo and one of the CDs is always Irish folk songs–either The Wolfe Tones or The Chieftains. I’m still growing my collection. One of my favorite songs is “Spancil Hill.” The sorrow, the homesickness in the song, is very poignant. It somehow connects to the present anxiety despite being rooted in a very different storyline. It’s no wonder it’s been sung by many different bands. It will touch hearts forever.
