Today, I received word that one of my poems, “A Fish Porter at Billingsgate,” was accepted for publication by a literary magazine–to appear next year. I got emotional about the news because it’s the first poem of mine to be accepted by a magazine. So much hard work. Also, I came to care very much about the subject–famous British actor Michael Caine’s father. He was a World War II veteran who spent most of his life toiling in obscurity as a fish porter at Billingsgate Market in London. As I said in the poem, “Three shillings and eight pence he left for his wife and sons, a rosary from the Pope for the liberation of Rome, and a vacant fish stall at Billingsgate.”
