It’s the middle of summer, the time when I inevitably talk to my friends about JAWS–about why it’s my favorite film. It was the first movie I ever loved. It’s certainly my favorite summer film and the ultimate in summer thrill. But it’s also a remarkable piece of storytelling. The shark is just a background threat, really. The true bloody water is between three men from different walks of life who have to get along and get something done. When I was a kid, I felt I was Hooper. I love sharks and read about them constantly. Now, I relate more to Brody. Maybe when I’m old and cranky I’ll be like Quint.
