Rummaging through old files and came across an article in the Lakeland Ledger from 1975 describing a Lawton Chiles campaign kickoff at Bartow Civic Center. Featured at the kick off are a hamburger fry, a puppet show by Bits ‘N Pieces Puppet Theatre, a “hound and hare” balloon race, a tug of war, and more. And of course, $10 per person limit on donations. As well as being a good man, Chiles was entertaining as hell. He sure had a knack for people-powered campaign theater.
